2018-2023 Ocracoke Re-Entry Permit Process

The Hyde County Emergency Services Department issues re-entry permits to Ocracoke residents and property owners to be used when emergency conditions limit general access to Ocracoke Island.

Re-entry permits are now issued to be valid for several years. To make the process even easier, people with existing permits only need to bring their existing tag to apply for a new 2018-2023 expiration date sticker for their permit. Those applying for the first time will need to complete the full application and supply all necessary documents.

You may apply for a new permit in person or by mail.  If applying by mail, the applications are processed quarterly.   If renewing your permit in person, make sure to bring the plastic hangtag permit with you.    Applications are done in person in May ONLY.  If you miss these dates you may send in applications or renewals by mail only (directions are below).  These applications will be processed and returned on the 1st of each month.   No applications are accepted during an active event.

Hyde County staff will issue Permits in Ocracoke at the Ocracoke Community Center on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, from 9am to 1pm, and Thursday, April 23, 2020, from 1pm to 5pm .

The Hyde County EMS 2018-2023 Re-entry Permit Applications are available below. To complete the process by mail, include a self-addressed and stamped envelope with all necessary documents.

Please mail this application and self-addressed stamped envelope to: Hyde County Attn: Donnie Shumate, P.O. Box 188 Swan Quarter, NC 27885
